New York Times editor Mara Gay called the Supreme Court’s ruling on abortion an “attack on modern America” that would lead to “death” in an appearance Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Co-host Mika Brzezinski mentioned a 2019 Atlantic piece on “The Dishonesty of the Abortion Debate” and cited harrowing stories about illegal abortions, implying that those unsafe procedures would become more common now that Roe v. Wade has been quashed.

Consequences' of Supreme Court Ruling on Abortion Will Be 'Death

Gay suggested this would be the case soon: “We like to pretend that our actions don’t affect others, but they do. And women in this country aren’t going to sit back and accept this.”

She continued, “They’ll do what they have to do to take control of their bodies and their own lives, and the consequences for too many Americans, I’m afraid, will be death, and other women, you know, who later may want to get pregnant and not be able to.”

Gay warned the statement is about more than just abortion: “There’s an element of this. This isn’t just about abortion but about attacking modern America as we’ve it.”

She then seemed to suggest that the Supreme Court will soon be tackling a litany of other key culture war issues.

“The ability and the freedom and the knowledge that we have the freedom as Americans, as citizens, to control our bodies,” she said. “To decide what to do, to Joe’s point, in our bedrooms with another consenting adult, and of course to also take birth control, which I think we have to take those threats seriously. That’s what’s happening now.”

Last June, Gay made headlines when he said on “Morning Joe” that it was “disconcerting” to see “dozens of American flags” while traveling to Long Island.
